He has published widely on First Amendment matters, including in the Harvard Law Review and the New York Times. He serves on the Boards of Fight for the Future and Demand Progress. He began his career at the corporate law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP and attended Harvard Law School.

Ryan co-founded Blockstack, a new internet for decentralized apps where users own their data. Ryan studied engineering at Princeton, went through Y Combinator, and was inducted into the Forbes 30 Under 30. He has authored several popular open source libraries in cryptography and blockchains.
