Making machines rage, love, and cry with cryptography

Jason Morton

One theory of human emotions is that they serve as commitment mechanisms: for example, tears are a credible request for help and alliance, and anger is a commitment to fight even at irrational risk of harm. They are critical to successful social interaction and cooperation. Today AIs have a harder time making such credible commitments to their mental state and future behavior. However, using modern cryptography such as zero-knowledge proofs, AIs can be given the ability to make such commitments and therefore integrate cooperatively as agents with human society.
